David Massengill is easily one of the finest singer/songwriters and storytellers in this country. His songs and stories combine a contemporary viewpoint with “the old styles,” an affectionate remembrance of a rural, Southern upbringing seen through the eyes of a quick-witted, yet warm-hearted narrator. Many of his earlier songs were narratives that
recounted real events or historical sketches. His most recent work (his 5th CD) is a sampling of many of the projects that he’s actively working on now. His live performances have been aptly described as “riveting”.

David has won numerous awards for his songwriting. His songs have been recorded by many other artists including Joan Baez, The Roches, Lucy Kaplansky, Tom Russell, Chad Mitchell, Dave Van Ronk, and Nanci Griffith.

David has performed in concert at Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center, and numerous US and Canadian Folk Festivals (including Newport, Vancouver, Winnipeg, Falcon Ridge, Lunenberg, Kerrville, Clearwater, Rocky Mountain Folk, and many more). It’s awesome to have him back for a house concert!

“There’s something disarmingly soothing about the sound of David Massengill’s voice. As a thirty-year resident of New York’s Greenwich Village, he speaks with efficiency, wisdom and streetwise common sense—but also that mellow
Tennessee accent that envelops his words with all the charm of a soft-spoken Southern gentleman. One could listen to him speak for hours on end… and that’s not a bad quality for a master storyteller like Massengill to have.” —- Sing Out!

“Massengill’s dulcimer-driven songs mix wisdom, wit and political astuteness…. [his] poetic lyrics, progressive politics and wry, homespun delivery can’t be easily pigeonholed. He’s an original talent…” —- Independent Weekly

“Native Tennessean David Massengill was a predictable show-stopper. His upbeat humor, enticing stage presence and ability to sling an Appalachian dulcimer over his shoulder like an electric guitar made it look and sound right. The multi-talented Massengill, a master of vivid lyrical imagery, was riveting with his ironic, anecdotal civil rights anthem, ‘Number One in America’.” —- Boston Globe
